Stern Center Student Staff Application 2020-21

Applications for 2020-21 for the Stern Student Center Staff are now open!

The Stern Student Center Staff provides organizational support to the Stern Student Center (SSC) through various positions including the Information Desk, Game Room staffing, 4th Floor Information Desk and Operations Crew. Staff are cross-trained to provide maximum efficiency in all areas.

Information Desk:
Greets visitors and guests to the SSC, providing customer service for the campus community.  Serves as a point of information for other on-campus offices and departments and is able to direct visitors to alternate locations; answers telephones, routes calls and messages to appropriate personnel; provides support for clients using facilities. May provide additional support for 4th floor Information Desk staff in their absence.

Game Room:
Provides support for the Game Room in the SSC.  Coordinates and monitors use of gaming supplies and equipment to members of the College of Charleston community.  Responsible for cleanliness of spaces during assigned work hours. Provides reports to team leaders and supervisors on equipment conditions and needs for student use.

4th Floor Information Desk:
Provides organizational support to the Office of Student Life and Stern Center. Greets visitors to the Student Life suite and provides support for Student Organizations during business hours (9:30am-4:30pm) when not staffed by a Building Manager. Checks out items for the Student Organization Resource Center, including tables for student organization tabling, and monitors the SORC for additional supply needs.  Collects information from student organizations and on-campus departments for distribution.  Assists in the day-to-day operations during high-traffic hours and events, including door opening requests and room setups. May provide additional support for 1st floor Information Desk staff in their absence.

Operations Crew:
Operations crews assigned on case-by-case basis for setups and high-volume days. Includes resetting of spaces, providing technology support, and may be shorter shifts. Shifts may include late-nights and weekends.

Additional Job Functions:

  • Provides high levels of customer service.
  • Ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work 10 – 12 hours per week (some nights and weekends required).


  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal.
  • General knowledge of campus resources.
  • General knowledge regarding gaming equipment and its use (optional).
  • Ability to work autonomously with limited supervision.
  • Ability to use human relations skills to interact with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and to exhibit a positive, helpful attitude.
  • Ability to work and maintain focus in a chaotic, high-energy environment.
  • Enjoys being creative and imaginative.


  • Must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and be enrolled in 12 credit hours (full-time student). The only exception will be for final-semester seniors.
  • Maintain satisfactory work performance; staff receiving warnings will be eligible to return pending satisfactory performance evaluations.
  • Not be found in significant or repeated violations of the College of Charleston Student Code of Conduct and Honor Code
  • Attends mandatory student staff training (week prior to first day of class in August and date prior to start of class in January) and regularly scheduled monthly staff meetings (Sunday’s at 2pm).
  • Demonstrates a sense of dependability regarding work hours and completion of assignments/tasks.
  • Appropriate dress and behavior within the Stern Student Center.
  • Willingness to learn as well as flexibility and adaptability to ever-changing situations.
